How to Set Business Goals That Actually Mean Something

Let’s be real, goal setting in business can feel like one of those things you should do… but often gets shoved to the bottom of the to-do list. Between juggling clients, marketing, emails, and maybe a toddler or two, who’s got time to sit down and map out a strategy?

But here’s the truth: without clear, meaningful goals, it’s really hard to grow. You end up reacting to whatever’s in front of you instead of building something intentionally.

So, how do you set goals that actually work—not just ones that look nice in a planner? Let’s break it down.

1. Anchor to Your Bigger Vision (Not Just Revenue)

Before you start writing down “hit 10k months” or “grow my socials,” take a step back. What’s your actual vision for the business—and your life?

Ask yourself:

  • Why did you start this in the first place?
  • What kind of work lights you up?
  • What do you want your day-to-day to look like a year from now?

When your goals align with your why, you’ll stop chasing shiny objects and start building something that feels right (and sustainable).

2. Get Clear on What You’re Tracking (AKA KPIs)

We know… “KPIs” sounds corporate. But stick with me—this is about knowing what to measure so you know what’s working.

Depending on where you’re at, your key metrics might be:

  • Number of discovery calls booked
  • Leads from Instagram or email
  • Monthly revenue or profit margin
  • Number of returning clients

Pick 2–3 things that actually move the needle in your business and check in with them regularly.

3. Be Specific and Keep It Real

Goals like “grow the business” or “get more clients” are nice… but vague. Instead, try:

“Book 5 new clients by end of quarter”
“Post 3 times a week on IG to grow visibility”
“Launch my first group program by October”

Make it measurable, time-based, and something you can realistically achieve (while still having time to breathe).

4. Don’t Try to Do It All

Newsflash: trying to tackle 15 big goals at once is a fast track to burnout. Prioritise what’s going to have the biggest impact right now—and park the rest.

Ask:What’s going to help me make money, save time, or build long-term growth?

Focus on that first.

5. Check In Often (Without the Guilt Trip)

Goals aren’t set-and-forget. Life happens. Business pivots. Sometimes what felt important three months ago doesn’t anymore—and that’s okay.

Set a monthly or quarterly check-in. What’s working? What needs tweaking? Give yourself permission to shift, ditch or double-down based on what’s real.
